Faroese Art - The inward view. Just over 80 years ago Sámal Joensen, a teenage boy on the island of Mykines in the Faroes, went around picking up paint tubes discarded by a travelling painter from Sweden and used them to create paintings of his immediate surroundings, the black sheer cliffs, the deep green patches of grass and the steel-grey sky. Later the blood-red colours of a pilot whale drive were added to this palette. This is in essence the subject matter and the palette that has defined Faroese art until the present day: fidelity to the harsh and magnificient landscape of the islands and the existential basis of the Faroese way of life.

The first modern Faroese poet, Nólsoyar-Poul Poulson, wrote politically inspired ballads dealing with corruption and the troubled economy of the early 1800s.
